Project Requirements
THE ASSIGNMENT
You will need to 'invent' a complex civilization that existed around 2010ad and develop a webpage to display the characteristics of this civilization. It must contain traits of complexity that we have discussed in class, and be detailed enough to be realistic and thoughtful. You will create an online museum to tell us about your discovery, and link it both to the project homepage (this site) and your Digital Portfolio. It must showcase everyday social life, geographical traits, and the decline and/or collapse of your civilization. Your exhibit MUST answer all of the questions below and draw parallels to concepts and civilizations that we have discussed in class.
Your website must contain at least one web page on each of the topics below:
1. Introduction: Introduce your civilization. Give your reader a little background on the project, and find a way to hook them into reading more about your civilization.
2. Geography and Life: Where does your civilization exist? What geographical advantages made life there possible? In what ways did your civilization struggle, or cooperate with others to be successful? What was everyday life like in your civilization?
3. The 5 Traits: How do you know this is a "civilized" society? List the 5 traits and give an example of each from your civilization. Explain, for each, how the example shows complexity in your civilization.
4. Artifacts: What artifacts did you discover that give you clues as to how your civilization might have lived? Show us pictures, artwork, or anything else you believe will be useful in proving your point. You must identify and explain at least 4 artifacts, and one MUST BE your collapse story.
5. Collapse: Explain, in detail, how your civilization collapsed. What important issues did they face? How did they attempt to deal with these issues? In hindsight, what recommendations would you make for your civilization that may have saved them?
Some additional suggestions,
We know from looking at other museums that online exhibits will often contain maps, pictures of artifacts and descriptions of how these 'tools' were used in everyday life, social reconstructions or 'artist renditions' of how monuments or objects may have looked during that time, photographs, and detailed information about the civilization.
Exhibitions always include important information about the society, but very little essay-style writing. Follow the TEA paragraph format in your writing, but be careful to generate an appropriate balance between text and other content.
Remember:
* Good websites have variety, originality, and are captivating and informative.
* Boring websites lack focus, content, are poorly written, or contain too much text.
Good luck!
